On Saturday 28th April we travelled north to
Cambrils which is a nice town with a small marina. We cycled into the town and
had a wander about. It started to rain a bit so we took cover in a coffee shop
and we made it back to the campsite without getting wet. Soon after we went to
bed the heavens opened and it poured, the campsite had rivers running down the
roads, a bit like the weather you have been having at home but warmer.
Heading further north we travelled to Mataro, nothing much
to do in the area near the campsite but we did manage to commandeer the television
in the bar to watch the motoGP.
Leaving Mataro behind we continued north and crossed the
border into France. At the border between Spain and France there is a town
called Le Perthus which the border passes through the middle of. The main
street is full of shops and Fench and Spanish flock here for bargains. On the
Spanish side the shops are mostly tobacco and booze, which is much cheaper than
in France so you can imagine the queue on the French side to get into Spain,
the traffic tailed back about 3-4 Km. Even though there are over 4000 parking
spaces you still could not have found one. We carried on to Argeles-sur-Mer.
Another lovely little seaside town so we stayed 2 nights.
We are now heading east and our next stop is at Clapiers
just outside Montpellier. We thought we would be able to cycle into Montpellier
but it was just a bit too far away so gave it a miss. The site was supposed to
be a luxury site but the pitches were not so good so we moved on the next day
to Beaurecueil which is just outside Aix en Provence. On the way there we
stopped at Aigues Mortes which is a fortified medieval town. We were a bit lazy,
because you know how hectic our lives are at the moment, and took the little
tourist train round the town. There are about 8000 people live within the walls
of the fortress which has got a circumference of 1.6km. After leaving Aigues
Mortes we drove through the Camargue and saw the famous wild white horses,
black bulls, pink flamingos and the paddy fields. Today we took the bus into
Aix en Provence and spent an enjoyable day wandering round the city, watching
street artists and drinking coffee.
